Parent-ed Well...?!
Perinatal Counselling & Early Parenting Support
Support for the journey into parenthood
— before, during and after birth.
Becoming a parent can be one of life’s most profound transitions. It can bring love, anticipation and joy — but it can also bring uncertainty, anxiety, grief, overwhelm, identity shifts and a sense that life has suddenly changed in ways you weren’t quite prepared for.
At Pathways Psychotherapy, we offer specialised perinatal counselling and early parenting support from pre-conception, throughout pregnancy and into postpartum and early parenthood.
Our approach recognises that there is no single way to become a parent, and no single way to experience the transition.
Whether you are preparing to conceive, navigating pregnancy, recovering from a difficult birth, adjusting to life with a newborn, or simply finding that parenthood feels harder than you expected, you don't have to navigate it alone.
A space where you don't have to have it all together.
There is no perfect way to become a parent.
You don't need to be coping perfectly before you reach out. You don't need to know exactly what is wrong. And you don't need to wait until you are struggling to ask for support.
Sometimes having someone alongside you — someone who understands the emotional complexity of this transition — can make all the difference.
We're here to support you through the journey into parenthood, wherever you are on the pathway.
Before pregnancy
The journey into parenthood can begin long before pregnancy.
For some, pre-conception brings excitement and hope. For others, it can involve uncertainty, fertility challenges, previous pregnancy loss, difficult decisions, relationship conversations or fears about whether they are ready.
Counselling before pregnancy can provide a safe space to explore:
-
hopes and expectations about becoming a parent
-
fears and uncertainty about pregnancy or birth
-
previous experiences of loss or trauma
-
fertility and conception challenges
-
changes in identity and relationships
-
family-of-origin experiences and how they may influence parenting
-
communication, connection and expectations between partners
-
the kind of parent you hope to become
During pregnancy
Pregnancy can be an emotionally complex time. Alongside anticipation and excitement, you may experience anxiety, vulnerability, changes in your body and identity, concerns about birth, or worries about how life and relationships will change.
You may be navigating a straightforward pregnancy, pregnancy complications, a high-risk pregnancy, a previous loss, or simply finding yourself more emotionally affected than you expected.
Perinatal counselling offers a place to slow down, make sense of what you are experiencing and develop ways of coping that support your emotional wellbeing.
We can also work with partners and support people who may themselves be experiencing anxiety, uncertainty or emotional strain as they prepare for this significant transition.

After birth — postpartum & early parenthood
The arrival of a baby can be beautiful, exhausting, disorienting and everything in between.
The early weeks and months can bring sleep deprivation, feeding challenges, changes in relationships, loss of personal space and freedom, unexpected emotions and a profound shift in identity.
For birthing parents in particular, there can be a significant period of adjustment as you recover physically while simultaneously learning to care for a new baby.
Sometimes you may feel deeply connected to your baby. Sometimes you may feel overwhelmed, disconnected, resentful, tearful or unsure of yourself. These experiences deserve compassion, not judgement.
Our support can include both psychological counselling and practical early-parenting support, helping you understand what is happening emotionally while also navigating the everyday realities of caring for a baby.
We can explore:
-
adjustment to parenthood and changing identity
-
anxiety, overwhelm and persistent worry
-
birth experiences that were frightening, unexpected or traumatic
-
pregnancy or infant loss
-
bonding and connection with your baby
-
feeding and early parenting challenges
-
sleep deprivation and emotional depletion
-
relationship changes and communication with your partner
-
finding your confidence as a parent
-
managing expectations and the pressure to “get it right”
-
balancing your own needs with the needs of your baby
-
developing a compassionate and sustainable approach to parenting.

You don't need to wait until things become overwhelming.
Perinatal counselling isn't only for times when something feels seriously wrong. It can also be a place to prepare, reflect, build confidence and strengthen your support network before difficulties become overwhelming.
We welcome mums, birthing parents, partners and other support people, recognising that the wellbeing of the whole family system matters.
Support in your own home
We understand that getting to an appointment with a newborn can sometimes feel like an enormous task.
Home visits may be available by arrangement for perinatal and early-parenting support. An additional fee applies for home visits, depending on location and travel requirements.
If leaving home feels difficult, please ask us about whether a home visit may be suitable for you.
