your Privacy & our Confidentiality
Before you attend your first session with us, it is important that you read and understand the following information regarding how we treat things you tell us about yourself and your situation. It is also a legal requirement that you sign a copy of this before counselling can commence. Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have any question feel free to address these when we meet.
At Pathways Psychotherapy we are legally obligated to ...
... respect and protect the privacy of our clients in accordance with the relevant legislation. As a registered member of the Australian Counselling Association we are furthermore bound and adhere to their Code of Ethics and Practice which covers confidentiality and privacy and may be viewed here.

All our files including your personal details, payment information and case notes are stored at a secure online practice management platform. This means your particulars are professionally protected from cyber attacks and data breaches. Moving your files digitally off-site and keeping no hard copies makes our clinic substantially more secure than conventional paper file practices.

As a general rule, your identity, name, address, personal information, orientation, condition, presentation, belief etc or anything you say to your counsellor will not be discussed with others. If your counsellor requires supervision, i.e. help from a more senior professional in the filed, in order to better assist you, only de-personalised information may be shared (you remain anonymous).

There are only three exceptions to this rule and each is self-explanatory and reserved for extreme circumstances:
1. If you, or your legal guardian, explicitly allow your counsellor to share your information (for example for a referral).
2. If there is genuine concern about the safety and well being of yourself or others.
3. If the counsellor is subpoenaed (formally requested) by a court or judge with legal jurisdiction.
